I have a class at 8am this semester, which is about the time I tried to make myself get up last semester. That means now I have to be up a bit before seven if I want to eat breakfast and get ready for my day, which is not that fun. This morning I woke up to the faint sound of one of my roommate's alarms and considered my options while still in my half asleep state. I could just keep sleeping until my alarm went off, but on the other hand my alarm is really loud and unpleasant sounding, and I figured it was almost time for me to get up. After thinking about it for a minute or so, I decided to look at the time and see how long I had until my alarm went off. Apparently, I had forever because it was already after 7:30 and my alarm hadn't gone off. Well, I really woke up at that point, threw on some clothes, and went out the door. I'm sure glad I at least woke up in time to get to class.
I'm not sure if there's any lesson to be learned from this experience. Sometimes, alarm clocks will fail us, and there's nothing to be done. Sure, this was probably my fault because I probably forgot to turn my alarm on, but that kind of thing just happens without warning all the time. I remember one Sunday on my mission waking up to see a lot more sun coming through the window then there should have been. Looking at my alarm clock, my companion and I saw that my alarm had not gone off and we didn't have much time to get to church. I showered first, then my companion jumped in the shower, and said he'd call a cab because there wasn't any other way we'd make it on time. In the couple minutes while he was in the shower, I looked at another clock in the apartment, which showed that, while we had slept in a bit, we did have plenty of time before church started. I figured out that the batteries in my alarm were dying, so the time had reset during the night or something. The point is, alarm clocks are not always 100 percent reliable.
